Why choosing the right hosting provider is important?

free WordPress Theme

  1. Slower server speed = Bad user experience

Slow loading web pages don’t provide an optimal experience for your users. Nobody likes sitting around waiting for a web page to load. If your site is hosted on a poor quality server page load times can become slow. And frustrating forcing users to leave your website and possibly never return.

  1. Low Reliability = Loss of revenue

If you generate income via your website even 5 minutes of downtime a day can turn out to be extremely costly. When a user is confronted with an error message they won’t hang around for the website to come back up, they’ll simply go elsewhere.

  1. Negative effect on SEO

Google has stated that page load times are taken into consideration by their page ranking algorithm. Therefore having slow web hosting negatively affects the position your website appears in Google’s resulting in fewer visitors.

  1. Management options

Some hosting providers restrict you from using basic options such as a CPanel, the ability to have FTP access in the case you require custom work and don’t what the developer to have full access. That is why, I have only included companies that facilitate these features.

  1. Support

We all get stuck, lost or confuse sometimes, and it is great to know that someone is at hand to help you with any issues or question you might have. What is more important is that your hosting company support team have a solid understanding of WordPress to serve you better.

  1. Price

If you are not careful, you could end up paying way more than you need to and even worse for an inferior service. That is why I have a price check each provider and rated them on the overall performance so that you know you are getting great value for money.

What are WordPress Hosting Requirements?

adsense templates
  • PHP 5.2.4 or greater
  • MySQL 5.0 or greater
  • Apache mod_rewrite module

Due to the popularity of WordPress, there’s no shortage of hosts that meet these requirements.

Different Types of Web Hosting Plans Explained

When looking for a potential web host, you’ll come across multiple types of hosting plans. There are five hosting plans commonly provided; most sites will only require shared hosting, but it’s good to know the difference and benefits each hosting option provides.

How to get Free WordPress hosting?

There are a few options to consider when it comes to free WordPress hosting and the number one choice being hosted on wordpress.com as a subdomain. This can be an excellent way to start blogging online for many that want to test out the idea for free and build up an audience and then transfer over that blog onto their domain. If you do go down this route, wordpress.com does allow you to blog on their platform using your own domain which comes out a cost. For me, there’s only one way to run a WordPress powered website properly, and that is via the self-hosted version which you can download from wordpress.org. Now that being said that there are a few other free hosting companies to consider and we’ve written and in-depth blog post and which is the best free hosting company for WordPress to consider.

Best Shared Hosting

Hosting companies can provide affordable hosting plans by grouping multiple low traffic websites onto a single server. Shared hosting will be able to handle a couple of thousand visitors per day which is perfectly suitable for low traffic sites or when you’re just starting out.

VPS hosting for WordPress

VPS (Virtual Private Server) is hosting on a single server that is partitioned into several smaller servers. Each of these VPS’s can then be individually configured to meet the needs of the site they’re hosting. VPS hosting costs slightly more than shared hosting but can handle more traffic.

What is managed WordPress hosting?

Websites that receive high volumes of traffic require their own dedicated server. Managed hosting is when a single client leases a server with the server setup and maintenance handled by the hosting company.

Dedicated WordPress hosting

Dedicated hosting is when you lease a physical server directly from a hosting provider. You have full control over the server; therefore server administration skills are required to setup and maintain the server.

What Makes a Good Web Host For WordPress?

One-click WordPress installation

If you’re unsure how to install WordPress manually, then 1-click installation makes it super easy to get up and running. One-click installers setup the database and WordPress files so all you have to do is configure some basic options.

Automatic Backups

Backing your website is an essential part of running a successful online company. With the ever increasing threats of been hacked online, it’s ideal to go with a hosting provider who as an automated backup and restore system in place. It’s worth noting that creating your own backup is also recommended as in the worst case scenario you’re not left out of pocket.

WordPress Administration support

Most hosting companies provide you with free support.

Now, why is this so important?
Because in the past when I’ve been with companies who weren’t specialized in WordPress whenever I had a WordPress related support question they would fob me off or suggest I check the wordpress.org forum.

On the other hand, if you’re with a provider can provide WordPress support they are better able to answer or direct your question.

Increase Website Performance

If the company you go with supports WordPress and is geared towards the open source CMS, naturally you’ll get a website that runs smoother. However, as the competition as become fierce for the hosting companies, many of them go the step further in providing caching and advanced technologies to ensure that your website loads blazing fast.

Server location

If your target audience is from a particular country then choosing a hosting company with servers located in that country provides a number of benefits. Firstly the time it takes for a website to load on a local server will be faster than if it has to be loaded from the other side of the world. Secondly, servers location is a factor used by Google when determining rankings for local searches.

Amount of storage space

Storage space refers to the amount of disc space allocated on your server. You need to ensure that your hosting plan has enough allocated storage space to meet your needs. Unless you are hosting video files or your site is extremely image heavy you’ll need no more than a couple of hundred megabytes of space which most hosting companies will provide even on the cheapest plans.

Amount of bandwidth usage

Bandwidth is the total amount data transferred by users visiting your site. Bandwidth limits are usually tracked on a month to month basis. Unless you have a huge amount of traffic, are self-hosting videos or run an extremely image heavy site you won’t use up a lot of bandwidths. For example, if you average page size is 1mb and you have 1000 pages views per day you would need 30,000mb (3 gigabytes) of bandwidth per month.

Recommended WordPress Hosting companies

Hosting companies offer cash incentives for referring visitors that sign up for hosting accounts. These incentives vary from company to company, but some companies offer 100+ dollars per sign up, so you’ll often see these companies heavily promoted on shady hosting review sites so be sure to do the proper research. Start out with a monthly plan and not purchase a yearly plan until you’re sure that the service meets your needs.

It’s a 12 years old company, which was started in Bulgaria and currently operated privately from their headquarters in the same country. They offer Linux and Unix based servers, missing the Windows one. They also offer dedicated WordPress and Joomla based hosting solutions where everything is taken care by the team behind. Delivering quality service has been their primary objective throughout the years and they have managed to do well. The Dashboard used behind is simple and according to the hosting standards. It makes everything easy for the newbies and also for the existing web developers.

  • One of the best thing about SiteGround is that they have data centres in Asia, US, and Europe, covering more grounds.
  • Their servers have been optimized perfectly for delivering top-notch performance. The speed optimized tech is named SuperCacher.
  • They have mentioned every technical aspect in a particular plan clearly.

  • Their Cloud and Dedicated hosting plans are good, however, a little expensive.
  • Their Shared hosting plan is the best for the newbies as they offer industrial standard services.
  • The geeks behind the service team are talented and experienced.
  • They also have Reseller hosting options if you’re looking for one.

  • Their one-click WordPress installation is not that clean, as they have customized it accordingly.
  • The Shared plans have limited disk storage and other related numbers.

With over 16 years of operating experience in this business, InMotion is one of the oldest and popular names. Linux and Unix based servers run the website and it has local offices in Virginia and California. It’s one of the hosting providers which has very rare negative reviews. The company is interested in investing in the new technologies and make sure their servers stay rock solid. The best thing which attracts hundreds of users and also my favourite is that every plan comes with SSD Drives. That means, the performance of the website will always be top notch.

  • The company offers to host solutions using Linux and Unix servers. There is a dedicated WordPress hosting plan as well.
  • Domain registration and web design services are also offered.
  • The team behind is talented and experienced enough to quickly sort out the issues.
  • There are both Dedicated and VPS hosting plans available too, but their Shared plans are the most popular.

  • Every hosting plan, even the shared ones uses SSD instead of traditional HDD which improves the performance significantly.
  • It lets users pick the servers based on the location, thus, allowing them to pick the closest one.
  • InMotion has a very good reputation among users.

  • The shared hosting plans are costlier when compared to competitors.

Our second recommendation is Bluehost which is among the top 20 web hosting providers around the world. The brand is owned by Endurance International Group, and it was founded in 2003. It is best known among users who are looking for Shared hosting plans. The plans offered are not only affordable, but the quality of the service delivered is top-notch. They also have a few country-specific websites, offering targeted services. Based on the hundreds of threads I’ve been part of in past years, Bluehost is among the most loved hosting providers. Most of the users are happy with the service they have for the price they are paying.

  • Shared hosting is their most popular plan, while they also have Cloud based hosting solutions which are equally popular.
  • A dedicated WordPress hosting plan is also offered, that takes care of everything related to the WordPress.
  • Other than VPS hosting plans, Bluehost even offers a WooCommerce specific plan, taking care of the e-commerce requirements.
  • Their support part is rock solid and the experienced team behind is always eager to sort out the equation ASAP.

  • The cPanel used inside Bluehost is easy to navigate and quick to understand.
  • Their servers stay uptime most of the times and during the downtime, the team behind makes things up almost instantly.
  • Free add-ons like domain, instant setup and $200 worth bonus are also added features.

  • The performance offered in the Shared plans are not that top-notch.
  • They do not offer any Windows hosting options.

HostGator is one of the oldest hosting solution providers and also among the top 5 ones. It has managed to earn an impressive reputation among users and affiliates. They offer both Windows and Linux based hosting solutions including a separate WordPress dedicated plan. The services are mostly up throughout the year, rarely going down. If you ask for any existing blogger or digital marketer, the chance of hearing recommendation about HostGator is high. Yes, it’s that popular and good! The user base behind is in millions of number and their servers are still working impressively to deliver what promised. HostGator has a reputation of being an affordable and top-notch hosting solution provider.

  • Their plans come with 45 days of money back guarantee while most of the competitors are offering just 30 days.
  • It comes with all the tools which are part of the cPanel, helping the user to quickly get over with the setup part.
  • It has dedicated reseller plans which bring more customers and keep everyone happy.
  • Dedicated hosting plans are available for both Windows and Linux servers.
  • A Cloud based hosting plan is also offered.

  • The plans they offer are good enough to offer a decent number of choices to the end users.
  • Not just WordPress, but every other script out there is supported.
  • They offer free transfer service and offers unlimited bandwidth and disk storage.
  • Their custom support is top-notch, having a good reputation among the existing users.

  • Shared hosting plans are crowded as most of their users select this plan.
  • Their support system is mostly slow, considering a large number of people they have to entertain.

GreenGeeks is a decade old brand, offering industrial standard hosting solutions. They are committed to offering hosting solutions using renewable energy sources which are an impressive thing if you’re not okay with the current global warming threat. Their basic plan is affordable, yet packing unlimited space, unlimited bandwidth, free domain and email. All of their plans include a free domain, free website migration, one-click installer, Google Apps configuration, and a lot more. Other than the basic Shared hosting plans, there are also VPS and Dedicated hosting options. A dedicated WordPress hosting plan is also offered. For geeks, Reseller plans are also available. In short, they cover most of the things a hosting service provider should.

  • Their interface is user-friendly and elegant in looks, which maintains the top-notch user experience.
  • Their support team is reliable and talented to sort out even server related queries in no time.
  • Performance is another area where their service excels and the website hosted are always fast and available.
  • Considering the services offered and competition, the pricing modules are good.

  • They offer unlimited storage and web transfer data with every plan.
  • Their plans come with free marketing and SEO tools which can help a new website reach more audience in fewer efforts and time.
  • Other than WordPress, Drupal and Joomla CMS platforms are also covered in their plans.
  • They have clearly mentioned about their data centre locations and types.

  • Their renewal price is costlier than the starting ones.
  • Their website builder tool is not that powerful as compared to other available tools.

Among all other hosting solutions I’ve used in past, DreamHost is my best and it’s going to stay that way. They have achieved an excellence in terms of user experience, simplicity, and delivering what’s promised. Signing up and getting started is dead simple, and their Dashboard area is not only simple but elegant. There is no list of tools which are made available just for the sake of it. Everything useful is part of the Dashboard and everything not-useful is simply not available. Their servers are uptime throughout the year and they are always informing about the maintenance downtime. In past, they have won many awards for delivering top-notch service and for being this simple and elegant. Also, they have been operating in the industry for more than 20 years.

  • Their Shared hosting plan is affordable and superb for starters.
  • They also offer WordPress specific hosting solution other than Dedicated, and VPS plans.
  • DreamHost has also started offering a Cloud-based hosting solution which is currently the best and modern.
  • It’s a known and very popular hosting provider, offering services for more than two decades.

  • Simplicity is their biggest benefit and I’m sure you’re going to love it.
  • Their plans are well mentioned and nothing is hidden from the users.
  • Their custom Dashboard is not only simple, but they take care of most of the things like installation and all.
  • Pricing modules are straight forward and the services are not that costly either.

  • For the sake of simplicity, they have given up the user interface which is ideal for the developers.
  • Finding the server and database is tough, as they keep most of the things in their hands.

A2 Hosting

With dedicated business operations in seven different countries around the world, A2 Hosting is among the best picks out there. They have been offering the hosting services since 2001 and are among the experienced ones in the industry. Their hosting plans are simple to look at and are affordable too. The really interesting thing to consider is that their VPS plans start at $5 per month only, which is really low compared to the competitors. Other than VPS and Shared hosting solutions, Dedicated and Cloud hosting plans are also part of their package.

  • They have focused on offering faster performance and are working throughout the year to deliver the same.
  • All of their plans come with SSD included without any additional charges, which is one of the reasons behind the fast performance.
  • The different configuration options available for the Advanced users are helpful and good for saving money.
  • One can pick the server closed to their country.

Pingdom test

LoadImpact test

  • Other than the affiliate program, they also have referred programs using which, anyone can quickly do the referral.
  • Their Turbo Servers are powered by SSDs and are improved further to deliver super fast performance.
  • Their multi-tiered Reseller hosting solution is really good and way better than what competitors are offering.
  • The technical support team is talented and experienced in sorting out issues quickly.

  • Their plans are oriented towards advanced users, not making a good choice for the beginners.
  • Their backup solution is really costly compared to the alternatives.

WP Engine

It’s not as old as aforementioned brands but still, has managed to earn a reputation which is remarkable. As one can understand from the name itself, WP Engine delivers services specific to the WordPress only. They have WordPress tailored applications and servers which have just one aim, i.e., to deliver the best user experience which is not cluttered. Their primary objective is to deliver a top-notch experience to the end-user while keeping everything secure, fast, and reliable. In short, anything related to the WordPress is taken care by their team and all the related features are included in the package. The only thing which keeps users away from getting onboard is the pricing, which is on the higher side.

  • Their dedicated WordPress plans are worthy of what’s being promised.
  • Each of mentioned plans has clearly stated the benefits in numbers. Making it easy for the users to take the decision.
  • The servers are optimised perfectly for the WordPress, thus, delivering super fast performance.
  • As their objective is straight and clear, the support team delivers every time.

Pingdom test

LoadImpact test

  • If you just want to focus on content and other marketing aspects, WP Engine can take care of all the technical sides.
  • Once a website is hosted on their server, it will definitely perform well.
  • There are hardly any errors which occur as everything is configured for the WordPress.

  • It’s a good choice for beginners, but not at all affordable.
  • Their basic plan is costly which still doesn’t include CDN offered in all other higher plans.

My experience with Web Hosting for WordPress over eight years

Around eight years ago I was in a similar situation when I decided what online business I wanted to get into. After doing a lot of research I decided, that WordPress is the CMSto use; it was one of the most popular at the time robust and easy to use. Then I learned of a thing called hosting which would be needed to take my idea online at the start I was a bit hesitant actually to sign up for a long-term contract with a hosting company as for me there was a lot of unanswered questions.

Ultimately I decided to go with a free hosting provider which is perfect for a few days, but whenever I had ten people on the website at once, there would be a 500 server error this became embarrassing as when I showed up friends my website often there was nothing to see. I didn’t have just one website I had a few hosted on different free web plan. Again it was great for a while until some of the files on the server got randomly deleted leaving me with no backup and weeks of hard work last.
This was one of the last experience I had that using a free web hosting provider. With that behind me, I set about

With that behind me, I set about finding a decent shared hosting solution that wouldn’t cost the arm and a leg. After reading several reviews online and getting deep into one of the most popular web hosting Forum(https://www.webhostingtalk.com/) Looking through lots of different threads and a reading of the first-hand user reviews I signed up to a relatively new web hosting company which offered a fantastic deal which has never seen or heard of elsewhere. I use them for several months the experience was pleasant until a few months in then I had an email informing me to remove all my files because that particular web hosting company(hosting orbit) was closing down.

Again another lesson learned which is to go with a more reputable and well established WordPress hosting provider to avoid a similar situation occurring.

I am by no means that claiming to be a web hosting expert of any sort I’m simply sharing the experience and knowledge gained over the past eight years working with WordPress and using a different web hosting companies, which I’ll be mentioning in this article.

Up to this point my experience has been rather unpleasant however the story does have a happy ending from that point on I had several positive experiences with:

  • Stablehost
  • Hostgator
  • Bluehost
  • Inmotion
  • Hawkhost
  • Eurovps.com
  • A2 hosting
  • Dreamhost
  • SiteGround

These are the few companies that I’ve used over the years and have had a relatively positive experience with. I will be going into more details about the each hosting mentioned further in the article.

Choosing a web host isn’t an easy decision to make. Due to the amount of hosting options available, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with choice. By giving yourself a solid understanding of the different types of hosting and plans available making the right decision becomes a whole lot easier.
